Packing Light Without Regretting It Later

Packing light fails when it is treated as a challenge rather than a set of decisions. The aim is not the smallest possible bag. It is a bag you can carry up stairs, through a station and onto a bus without thinking about it.

Start from a colour decision. Choosing clothes that share two or three colours means almost any combination works, which is what actually reduces the count. Most over-packing is caused by items that only match one other item.

Pack for the laundry cycle, not the trip length. Four days of clothes plus access to a washing machine covers a week, a month or a year. This is the single largest reduction available and the one most people resist.

Take the shoes you will wear all day and one alternative, nothing more. Shoes are the heaviest and least compressible thing in any bag, and the third pair is almost never worn.

Bring a layer for weather you do not expect. A light waterproof shell and one warm layer handle the surprising majority of conditions and remove the temptation to pack for every forecast individually.

Everything else, including toiletries, chargers and medicine you have not needed in a year, can be bought where you are going. Leaving room for that is not a risk; it is what makes the bag usable.

Weigh the bag before you leave and carry it around the block. If that is unpleasant at home, it will be much worse at the end of a travel day.
